 Mudcub's Top Movies of 2009

I have a hard time completing a top movie list by the end of the year. So many films only come out in specialized markets for a week or two... just long enough to qualify for Oscar nominations when the movie "really" comes out. Yes, Master Thor, I envy you... seeing things in New York City that don't come out in the hinterlands until weeks later. So, there are dozens of contenders I haven't seen yet. I'll wait for the DVD to come out, which might not be until the middle of 2010. So, I'll try to post an updated list next summer, but until then, here are some things I saw this year that I really liked:

1. Coraline
2. Where The Wild Things Are
3. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
4. The Brothers Bloom
5. Persepolis
6. Julie & Julia
7. Role Models
8. Trick 'R Treat
9. State Of Play
10. Son Of Rambow
(also)
Star Trek
Bruno
Let The Right One In
Zack And Miri Make A Porno
Big Stan
The Devil's Miner
Ghost Town
Ponyo
Crank 2: High Voltage
Tokyo!
District 9

Mudcub's Worst Movies of 2009

...and then there are the stinkers. I really regret the hours of my valuable time that these movies sucked away from me. Like the "Most Disappointing CDs" list earlier, these were all movies that I starting watching fully intending to like them. Sure, I often love watching bad movies on purpose. I want to see "From Justin To Kelly" soon. But that's a different list. These are the films that broke my heart and made me realize how bad bad cinema can really be:

1. Knowing
2. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
3. The Cell 2
4. Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans
5. Seven Pounds
6. Four Christmases
7. The Final Destination (aka Final Destination 4: Death Trip)
8. 12 Rounds
9. Gran Turino
10. Mirrors
(also)
Twilight
Race To Witch Mountain
The Killing Room
The Time Traveler's Wife
Pineapple Express
Watchmen
Bride Wars
Adventureland
Dance Flick
The Book of Blood
House Of 9
Wolfhound
Objectivity
The Eschelon Conspiracy

You forgot "District 9.

I watched this with longhairbare in Monrovia. We both forgot our Dramamine!

Maybe your list is an indication not to see a movie with a number in its title ;)

It's on the list. The very last item on my "Best" list. I think it was over-hyped, but I admired the director for attempting some creative sci-fi. I still want to see "9", "Nine", and "Planet 51" soon.

Apparently you missed the GI Joe movie - so horrifically bad in every way that it makes the Transformers movie look like Citizen Kane by comparison.

At least GI Joe had some hot gear. I'm a sucker for a man in rubber and leather...

Please find a copy of Ink.

I saw Knowing with low_fat_muffin earlier this week. I'm still trying to get the stench out of my DVD player.

The transformer movie was weak because it didn't put out enough current.

(Electronic humor, there)

Is watchmen on list of bad movies because you read comics first? I thought the movie was great and different, and *that* got me into getting comics.

Yeah, perhaps I've been thinking about a "Watchmen" movie for the last 20 years, so that when it finally came out, I thought "meh" (which is shorthand for mediocre). I think it was too little, too late for me

Ah, that makes sense. For me, Watchmen movie introduced me to some great adult american comics, starting with Watchmen comics of course. Since I lived in Serbia most of my life, comics like Watchmen never really reached us over there.

There were a lot of mainstream movies of 2009 I didn't see and hope to catch on DVD someday.

I saw a lot of small/indie movies and older films, the latter can't be considered for this list, but a couple of the former made my Best of 2009 shortlist:

AVATAR
THE BROTHERS BLOOM
CORALINE
DISTRICT 9
FANTASTIC MR. FOX
NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF OZPLOITATION
PONYO
UP

Three 2009 movies that I'm looking forward to and plan to see in theaters:

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS
NINE
SHERLOCK HOLMES

Some 2010 movies that I'm looking forward to seeing:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
ROBIN HOOD
SHUTTER ISLAND
TOY STORY III
TRON LEGACY

Odd - Inglourious Basterds isn't on either list.
