Best and Worst Movies of the Year
Here are my favorite movies of the year. However, the list is incomplete, because I haven't seen everything. Who knows? Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked may turn out to be my favorite movie of all time. I'm lucky because I live in New York City, and I get to see things before they come out to the rest of the country. But don't be jealous - think of us as an early warning system.

Sure! We disagree. I thought with all the CGI and art direction that the movie would be more than a generic "hot girls in peril" type of movie. But it wasn't. Didn't Halle Berry already do the atmospheric mental patient in "Gothika"? And DiCaprio in "Shutter Island"? And a million other movies since "The Snake Pit"?

But I'm also a little worried when a movie seems to serve a sadomasochistic fetish that some straight guys have. Have you seen "The Cell"? That was another beautiful action-filled movie, but at it's heart was really a sick snuff-porn movie about hot girls being killed in a stupid unrealistic manner.

There are terrible terrible movies not on my list. I'm sure there was a Beverly Hills Chihuahua sequel I missed. But one of the biggest criterion for a bad movie is that it I had their CGI budget, their actors, and their basic plot, I could come up with a much better movie. My version of Sucker Punch wouldn't have been a stupid, "find five items and defeat the boss" martial-arts wank fest.

sometimes you don't want a steak dinner and just want some cotton candy, though. SP was never going to win any awards, and we all knew that. it was there to be an effects romp, it was there to be a live action anime film. it didn't have a message, and certain aspects about the whole thing are distasteful. it was a lot of icing and not a lot of cake, but sometimes you just want that sugar rush.
