Bumper Sticker Activism
Black eye

I'm still pissed about Barack Obama choosing anti-gay pastor Rick Warren to give his inaugural invocation. So, I'm going to fight back the way gay activists do in the year 2009:

I'm going to wear a snarky t-shirt around DC during MAL weekend

Please help me choose which shirt is the best. If you have Photoshop skills and are inspired, please create new designs of your own.

It's true that a t-shirt needs to have a punchy, simple message to be effective. I still have not figured out exactly how to respond, but it's clear to me that Rick Warren and Saddleback need to be outed as hypocrites and promoters of hate speech, not to mention hate actions. Beyond that, Warren's political activities should effectively trigger an IRS audit revoking Saddleback's tax-exempt status.

All protest and discourse are good, but I agree with Bruno above, the most effective T-shirts are like billboards -- eye-catching and able to be read in two seconds, in passing.

Here's a few other designs I saw at cafepress:

If I was designing one, I might go with

with pictures of Obama on top and Warren below. It's kind of a play on the "Love the sinner, hate the sin" line homophobic religious people give as a rationale that they're not bigoted.

Thank You Sir. i was afraid people wouldn't know what Rick Warren looked like (for example, on the button above). To me, it looks like "Don't hug fat guys with goatees".

i am also not in favor of just saying "Rick Warren is bad". This is about Obama's discretion, not the bigoted opinions of a small-minded preacher. i like the rainbow t-shirt above, but it's awfully wordy. "Love the winnner, hate the hater" is good, but not specific to the Inauguration. i guess i could wear that shirt in the future. {grin}

i didn't mean to be forward or arguumentative with the t-shirt idea. Of course, my dress and behaviour during MAL weekend aren't mine to decide and choose!

You may have some free time at MAL when you're not naked or trussed up in a dark corner. But your best opportunity to wear this T-shirt is while transversing the airports on your way to the hotel. At MAL you'll only be preaching to the choir!

I'll probably butcher Shakespeare but I think the quote is;

Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell,
Must, like a whore, unpack my heart with words

I mean seriously, if that's the extent of your anger and action, save your money and get yourself a nice buttplug.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but just seeing where activism has gone from when I was younger in the leather community makes me so sad.

How about a buttplug with a political statement written on it?

Like "shove it" ?

well someone had to say it. :D

And i go by the old chestnut, let he who iswithout sin throw the first stone. i think its just a silly thing to protest to begin with. We arent the only people in the country you know.

How about you have a couple hundred of people a few blocks from the White House?

Get some signs and march where you're statement might make a difference instead of scoring snark points?

1-2 hours, you could even do it early and miss some cocktail parties.

Sorry, I won't say anymore, you were looking for peoples opinions on the shirts.....

I say "A"

I'm thinking the buttplug would say something along the lines of:

"Remember all those hopes and dreams you had for the Obama presidency? Well, stick it up your ass."

Does it get read before or after the plug goes in, cause coming out it could be a bit... muddy.
